How Startups Can Reach Their First Customers

Launches are not a distribution strategy. Here is how early-stage companies find the first hundred customers.

Most startups have a product before they have a way to reach anybody. The launch produces a spike, the spike decays inside a week, and the team discovers that building distribution is a separate job from building software.

A launch is an event, not a channel

Launches are worth doing. They are not repeatable, and they do not put you in front of a specific customer. What you need after launch week is something that runs every day whether or not anyone is paying attention to you.

Get specific before you get scale

The instinct at the earliest stage is to keep the target broad, on the theory that anyone could be a customer. In practice that produces messaging so general that nobody recognises themselves in it.

Choose one product category and one geography, and write an email that a person in that exact position would find obviously relevant. You can widen later — it is much harder to narrow after you have built everything around being generic.

Reach people directly

Early on, direct contact beats broadcast, because you cannot yet afford to pay for attention and you have no audience to speak to. An email from a real person at a real company, sent to someone who plausibly has the problem you solve, is the highest-signal thing you can do.

With Find New Customer, you tell us what you sell and who you want to reach, and your campaign goes out daily from your own mailbox. Replies come straight back to you, which at this stage is more valuable than any analytics.

Talk to everyone who engages

In the first months, engagement is research. Someone who clicked and then went quiet is telling you something about your offer. Someone who replied with a question is telling you what your homepage failed to explain.

Save them, add notes, and treat the conversation as product work rather than sales work.

Do not confuse activity with progress

It is easy to feel productive when a campaign is running. Filter your dashboard to This month and look at how many customers engaged. If that number is flat across two months, the problem is the offer or the targeting, not the volume — sending more of a message that is not landing will not fix it.

Be honest in the email

You are early. Say so. “We are new, here is what we built, here is who it is for” is disarming and it filters for people who are comfortable being early — which is exactly who you want first.
